We are reaching out because we need your help spreading the word about this exciting opportunity.
The JusticeMakers Program is searching for human rights defenders with innovative strategies to prevent torture within the criminal justice system at national and local levels. Having local human rights advocates run projects on the ground has been a truly effective method of reaching out and supporting those in need. Applicants will be required to submit a detailed proposal of their idea, and those with the most innovative, sustainable, and efficient project will receive a $5,000 Fellowship to implement it. Winners will also be connected to a global network of support for this work.
This year, IBJ, with the support of the National Youth Council of Singapore and Asia Philanthropy Ventures, is reaching out to young legal professionals aged 20 to 35 years, from ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste for proposals.
Here’s how you can help:
Circulate our Call for Applications through your email list to your members
Forward our Call for Applications with other networks of NGOs/CSOs or lawyers who may be interested in our competition.
JusticeMakers is the first global criminal justice innovation program founded in 2008. JusticeMakers is an online community that connects passionate members of the criminal defense community, facilitates discussions, and hosts competitions to fund innovative proposals that seek to curb torture and legal abuse. As a project of International Bridges to Justice, JusticeMakers seeks to unleash the collective energies of criminal defenders from around the world and realize the vast potential of international human rights legislation. The online effort is supported by a partnership structure that brings the website’s tools and wealth of knowledge to those living beyond the digital divide.
In recognition of the fundamental principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) is dedicated to protecting the basic legal rights of ordinary individuals in developing countries. Specifically, IBJ works to guarantee all individuals the right to competent legal representation, the right to be protected from cruel and unusual punishment, and the right to a fair trial.
Since 2001, IBJ has trained over 22,000 defense lawyers worldwide, through its comprehensive work in China, Cambodia, India, Burundi, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. IBJ runs a global support program for defenders including its online resources, such as eLearning and Defensewiki.
